Well hey, if you want to just ignore the source of the problem and hope it goes away, good luck with that.

That's pretty passive aggressive. :p

I love the new rules, the fact that there's now a 'Rules' button next to the 'Theme in the header, and the red report button.

One thing:
Quote:
Always properly tag / spoiler content that may not be safe for work (NSFW). This goes for writing, images, embedded videos, and links to external sites.
While artistic nudity and tastefully explicit content is permitted, please refrain from posting anything that may be considered disturbing (excessive gore, shock images, etc.)

My interpretation of this rule at first blush, which may be wrong, is that even if something is tagged NSFW, one should still refrain from posting anything that may be considered disturbing. Is my reading of it correct, and, what specifically is the definition of disturbing?

I mean, there were two examples provided, but, they aren't precisely easy to extrapolate from, or, they may be considered to be breached - there are quite a few roleplayers who enjoy themes which go to the darker side, and some of the images on their profiles or guilds can be considered 'excessive gore' or 'shock images', whatever the latter means. Just seeking clarity in this. I get the intent of the rule being that anything disturbing should be tagged but even things which are tagged shouldn't cross a line (outright pornography, for example) but the examples seem to undermine the intent.

Good catch! I actually meant to specify images / videos with those examples. Thank you for pointing that out.

In general, I'm more concerned with people posting disturbing media than I am with them posting disturbing stories. To clarify a bit, "shock images" are—at least the way I'm considering them—those which serve no real purpose other than to shock the viewer. What I'd basically like to say with this rule is, "don't post things just because they're disturbing."

To be perfectly honest, if it's properly tagged, there's a good chance we won't take issue with it, but I would still like to discourage outright pornography (as you said) and excessively disturbing media just for the sake of being disturbing. My intent with this rule was to slightly loosen the restrictions outlined in original rule #5, but if I've ended up making it even less clear, then I'll look at rewording it.

How does this sound:

Quote:

  • Always properly tag and/or spoiler content that may not be safe for work (NSFW). This goes for writing, images, embedded videos, and links to external sites.
    • While explicit content is permitted so long as it's tagged, please take caution and be courteous when posting any media that may be considered excessively grotesque or disturbing. (Chances are, if you have to ask yourself whether that picture you're about to post is crossing a line, it probably is.)

Have always found the term NSFW somewhat amusing... at least since one figured-out what it meant, which was probably a decade after its' invention. (What can one say... this one has never been very sharp with abbreviations, or "brevity" for that matter. [/shrugs] )

Every time one sees this "flag"... well, after thinking, "Oooh... that'll probably be "tail"! "... one can hardly help but get to thinking about what these workplaces might be: Presumeably, some things which one would not leave on an open lap-top if one worked in the gift-shop attached to the Sistine Chapel would be quite acceptable (and perhaps even attract excited curiousity) if one were attending an editorial-meeting of "Fangoria" magazine. Similarly, if one were to display a tasteful topless print of the goddess Nemesis in the office of an art-gallery, this would probably be fine; not so much if one pasted it to ones' bunk on a ballistic-missile-submarine.

So... for the sake of briefly adding some levity to the discussion... what do folk think the ideal test-case "workplace" should be when judging something to be "NSFW"? A small accountancy-firm? An antiquarian book-shop? Liberian-flagged tramp-steamer? Local crafts-fair?

There must be some suitable sort-of "standard-unit" workplace all can agree-on, yes?

...So, this is where that rule about staying on topic would really come in handy.

As intriguing of a conversation as this could potentially be, I think you're either missing the point or you should perhaps take those musings into their own thread. After being sidetracked by memes for half the thread, I would like to try to remain on topic and productive as much as possible, particularly as we're starting to finalize the set of rules we have.

I'm working on finalizing moderator policy with the rest of the staff as we speak, and the current draft on the OP here will be put up by tomorrow! If you all have any further suggestions to be made in this thread, now is the time!

Keep in mind that even once this thread is locked and the rules are posted, the Site Suggestions & Feedback forum is still open! We're always looking for suggestions and feedback on how we can improve, so don't hesitate to make a thread or contact me privately if there's still more to be said.

As well, I have another announcement that will be put up tomorrow in addition to the rules. No spoilers—chances are it'll only really be useful for a handful of you at first—but we'll see!

Edit: The new rules and moderator policies have been posted, and you can find them at any time using the Rules link at the top of the page! Thanks for the input, everyone!
