________

There is no empire without valor, there is no authority without force. If Colovia is her sword, if her soldiers are her bulwark, then House Varro is her spearpoint. Through austerity they are raised, severe in their conviction, undying in their love for home and family, for law and duty. In the ancient highlands they were molded, where the way of the horse and the sword and the lance fused their very being. They are the watchmen on the hill, the saviors everlooming; to their allies, the thunderdrum of victory; to their enemies, the heavy toll of death.

_______

Heartlands

The Varro River crosses the Colovian Highlands’ southern reaches where hills of dark blond wheat stretch from horizon to horizon; and it was at a narrow ford, where the white foam rippled over pebbled shallows, that House Varro was founded. Yet in ancient days they came from lands further north, in the snow-shrouded reaches of the Highlands, where the descendants of Nedic tribes carved out a primordial existence in their nomads’ villages, raiding farmsteads of the warmer south on their swift and hardy mountain horses.

During the War of Righteousness, one chieftain among these wild men swore his allegiance to the Cyro-Nords against the Alessian Empire, leading a mistrusted auxiliary of horsemen in a decisive battle in the Colovians’ favour. Having turned the tide of battle against the Alessians, their leader, Bleda the Pagan, was granted land and took the name of the river his riders had forded as they made their way to this promised estate: Varro

Centuries on, Bleda is reduced to a mythologized figure, a terror invoked in menace against unruly children.’Bleda’s horsemen roam the hills at night, boy.’ ‘The black riders will take you for their pyres.’ ‘Bleda the Pagan nails wicked boys to his cross.’ The River Varro dwindled in size as it was dammed for farmlands to the west, and the passing years saw it stripped of its name, and now it is but a rocky stream that courses between the hillocks near the Varro Estate – dwindled much like the fortunes of its namesake house that took shelter on its banks.

Scourge.png

Scourge

It is true that the Varros have played the part of worshipping the Divines in the recent past, but no longer. Under Belisarius, they have returned to their barbaric roots and turned their backs on the traditional patronage of the monastic orders and abbeys; no longer do their riders offer protection to those pretending at piety. The hospitals that Belisarius had constructed with the commerce he gained through trade with the Noble Concourse have been transformed into outposts and forts of war; the displaced masses who dwindled his resources and supplies have been turned away if they could not claim Colovian heritage, and all manner of charity, be it gold or grain, has faded away. Now, his riders patrol their land with a ruthless territorialism. No quarter is given. It is said that a travelling priest of Arkay was caught seeking tithes on Varro’s land. The following day his body was found crucified upside down with the words “SCOURGE OF THE GODS” carved into his leaking chest.

Commerce.png

Commerce

It was the horse that was Bleda’s sole legacy from his highland existence – the stocky, barrel-chested warbeast whose dark mane lay tangled against his thick neck. As the current lineage of the Varro family descends from one man, their prized livestock, it was said, also descended from this one stallion; a great black beast with a white blaze on his brow, that served his master until his death in battle, having sired a legacy of foals that laid the foundation of their breeding stock.

Today, the destrier is the most prized commodity of the horse-lords, though their numbers were depleted as the estate suffered ruin at the hands of Lucius Proximus Varro, and new foals are highly prized. The breed’s compact but powerful physique is well-suited for carrying a heavily-armoured rider into battle, where stallions are favoured for their natural aggression. Commonly bred from foalhood as warhorses, they display a thick, arched neck, a broad and muscular chest and well-muscled hindquarters. Their coats tend towards dark, solid hues – most commonly black and bay, with the characteristic blaze of Bleda’s stallion remaining a common marking. Their medium stature makes them ideally suited to quickly and easily vaulting back onto the beast should the rider be dismounted in combat.

Crum_Reg.png

Cum Rengaverit

The Varro are known to have retained barbaric customs into the present day, as ceremonial vestiges of their savage roots. Though centuries have stripped away their original significance, the traditions of animal sacrifice and pyre-burnings date to Bleda the Pagan’s time. As the recently ennobled house transitioned into the worship of the Divines, these practices were set aside as they put forth efforts to quell rumors of their impiety and dark rituals. In the following centuries, their support of the Knights of the Circle and the Order of Arkay allowed them to bolster their reputation as a legitimate and faithful Colovian house.

Yet the shadow of corruption and daedric ritual hangs over them in the deeds of Lucius Proximus Varro and his sons, and few living today know that Bleda and his horsemen worshipped the daedra as war-gods, and called them by names of their own making – Boethar, Dagon, Baal. And to these cruel and belligerent gods they made sacrifice of horse and man alike, and lashed the exsanguinated bodies of their human offerings to stakes, and left them to decay in the countryside.

Today, tales of this secrecy live on in a more benign form: of stories told to children around the bedfires of Cyrodiil and Colovia, meant to scare the little ones into doing their chores, lest Bleda the Pagan come with his wild band and take them away from family and home.

How to Join

Thank you for having interest in becoming part of House Varro. An Imperial House on the NA-PC server with a focus on military, the Colovian Highlands, and noble themes.

If you have not already done so, we encourage everyone to read "About House Varro" to get a stronger understanding of the atmosphere and interests the guild carries.

Reminder:

Who we are:
We are an 18+ heavy roleplaying guild focused in Cyrodiil and the Gold Coast. While we do not actively recruit, we are very interested in meeting new characters who might fit our style of play. If you would like to explore the possibility of joining House Varro, we are happy to announce that applications are open. Please fill out the form on our site, here. If you have any questions, please contact Belisarius (@Belisarius.Varro).

What we look for:
Though we acknowledge that TES is a high fantasy setting, we like to keep to a certain atmosphere and tone in the guild that veers towards historical-realism, grittiness, and low-fantasy. The atmosphere in roleplay is important to us. We regularly engage in mature themes and motifs. Murder, brutality and ruthless practicality are par for the course for the greyness of morality we like to portray. While it is very much a matter of taste, your character must not break that level of immersion we're trying to create. We liken our guild to “Game of Thrones” in Elder Scrolls, and House Varro’s alignment might be compared to a mixture of House Lannister and House Stark, depending who you ask.

Regarding mages, we prefer players of mages to adhere to the concept that acts of magic take a toll on their characters and may require several components to perform and even then it might do so with a high cost.

In the case of mer and beastmen, we pride ourselves in being an Imperial guild first, and at current, we have no mer in our ranks. As an Imperial Colovian house, mer and beastmen would be met with a good amount of animosity and derisive behavior from our members. House Varro is largely comprised of human nationalists.

In terms of monsters, we did at a certain time period find a case-by-case basis for werewolves, but this time period has ended. We currently do not allow vampires or werewolves to join.

Alignment: The guild is not good aligned; it is lawfully neutral and nationalistic; we look out for ourselves first, Colovians second, and the people of the Empire last. We engage in Machiavellian politics and open conflict roleplay quite regularly, and we expect our players to be able to handle in-character conflict without obsessive amounts of consent. This is not a place for handholding.

Additionally, we are glad to work with people that have an interest in joining the guild to create a character concept that would be a workable fit. Our care is for quality over quantity, and our application reflects this as we seek out those who would put effort into their answers and meet a basic level of grammar and quality roleplay mixed with the understanding and adherence to lore. Please do not put spelling and punctuation mistakes in your application.

Being an 18+ guild is our way of reminding everyone that our roleplay can dip its toes into mature themes and violent themes. Methods of warfare, sex, genocide, torture, etc.

We are OPEN. for applications at this time.

If you have any questions, please contact Belisarius (@Belisarius.Varro in-game).

OOC:
Drama is not tolerated. Out-of-character manipulation, unkindness, and discontentment will be met with strict disapproval. If you are not having fun, we want to know why. We rely on communication, trust, and honesty. If you are unable to separate in-character actions from out-of-character relationships, we do not want you in the guild.

We expect your membership application to be submitted with the same time, care and thought put into it as we have put into this guild. And while we are all busy people, if you are not serious about developing a character and telling a story with us, you will be left behind. It is not the guild’s job to inform you of every little roleplay event that occurs; it is up to you to be a self-starter, to stay up-to-date with the forum and the messages-of-the-day, and to log in regularly to see what’s going on, and to get involved. If you fall inactive for a significant period of time, we can work with you, but we will not stop telling the story of our characters if you stop collaborating with us. This is a team of contributors. Everyone needs to give some time and effort to see it work properly. Alts are acceptable, but please make an effort to come to events and roleplay gatherings when you are able. Inactivity >30 days will result in removal from the guild.

Bluntly stated, you’ll get out of this what you put into it. The majority of upward mobility within the house is directly dependent on in-character events, but no matter how great your character is, if you fail to adhere to our OOC guidelines, you will not last long.

At the end of the day, we are here to write, tell stories, and have fun. If you keep these things paramount, we’ll get along just fine--and we’ll have a damn good time doing it.

Oh, we play the game a little too.

XIn the beginning was the word – surely one of the most notoriously resonant place-names in the history of Tamriel. Even had its demesne never carried on beyond the Second Empire, the Varro name surely would have impressed itself upon the minds and memories of the Imperial peoples for what it meant to their ascension: conjuring up visions of gold and ruby and onyx, of wartime steel and profitable gold mines and thundering horses in the highlands. Of stately brocades and columns of alabaster marble as wide as the legs of giants. Of yawning halls that echoed into the ancient past. Of barbaric mosaics dimly glowing through halls cloudy with the scent of incense and pungent firewood.

Next, the site; and this too was supreme. Standing on the very threshold of Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, occupying the northernmost tip of Colovia, atop a broad, triangular promontory, its south side protected by the rolling foothills of the Colovian highlands, and it’s north-east by that deep and barely navigable pass cut down long ago by the dried-up tributary, some ten miles long, known since remotest antiquity as the River Varro. It had been molded by nature into a magnificent passageway cut through ancient stone, creating above it an impregnable stronghold. This, the Varro Estate, needed only a single fortification on the southward side, which was always held in Colovian hands.

House Varro employes multiple player houses spread across our roster to represent both the mansion as well as the entire demesne. Some may even be used for locations in nearby villages the banner has deep connective loyalties towards. As a result, we absolutely suggest installing the addon, Port to Friends, which allows you to travel to any of the houses employed with literally a press of the button no matter if it is or is not a player's primary residence.

XAt the highest peak of the Varro property sits the walled-in manor and acres of grounds forming its bailey. There, along with the residence of the Varro who sits as Lord, one can find other points of interests including the barracks, training grounds and the stables. Fortified against the many threats that plague the Highlands - from beast to monster and the men in between - four towers overlook the surrounding woods and roads coming from nearby villages. Each tower is interconnected by the walls frequently patrolled by members of the Bucellarius and along the front fence are double rows of pikes used to display heads that once threatened the Lord Varro.

The gates to the interior demesne open at dawn to allow the flow of merchants, diplomats and patrons room to move throughout the day. Nearby villages and their population provide staff to the Varro mansion and its many facilities. At dusk, the gates close leaving those seeking entrance to give a strong reason as to why they would request such a late, often unexpected, audience in the Varro hall.

The Stables

The Lord of Horses does not have such a name by having a horse or two strewn about his lands. The Varro have kept horses since as long as any can recall and the stables are home to their prized stock. Though the numbers have waned from decay over time, there is hope as foals are born each coming season.

The Barracks

To the left interior of the bailey surrounding the mansion is the barracks set up to provide rest for those who provide sword and shield to House Varro. Not all who stay within these four walls are permanent fixtures. Often many of them have houses in the nearby villages with their families but it is true that it is a place to lay down for a rest, bloodied and bruised or not.

The Medicinal Ward

Home to the healers who tend to those of broken bone, flesh and from time to time spirit. Presently this fixture to House Varro passes better days where it was once well stocked and maintained but as the banner grows its present tiny location begs for fresh air.

Travel to the primary residence of @Belisarius.Varro

XRising a total of two floors the manor spreads out in a traditional square shape with two separate wings and includes a subterraneous level carved into the natural stonework and caverns rumoured to exist. Beyond the heavy oak doors to the mansion itself, one enters the main hall where patrons of House Varro gather to share meals and conversation.

Around its interior are halls that lead to the kitchens through the eastern end and the west leads to the library. Ending the main chamber is the office of Lord Varro, where guests and patrons alike seek his time for business and matters of the House. The grand staircase leading to the second floor is in the east end to the main hall.

The second floor splits into the same pattern of direction-based sections: the northeastern wings that often overlooks the courtyard are filled with guestrooms and places for patrons to stay on the grounds. Each suite is simplistic but comes connected to private baths. Decurion often patrols the interior second floor as much as they would the walls, specifically the corridor leading to the northwestern corner that seats the Varro bedchambers.

The Kitchens

Travel to the eastern end of the main hall and a short hall - the butler pantry - leads into the House Varro kitchens. Fully staffed the facility is capable of feeding all members of the banner three meals a day while providing fresh drinks and filling bites at request. A staff of ten maintain each station from the ovens to the sinks ensuring that there a smooth transition between meals in preparation and execution.

The Library

West of the main hall is a long, winding corridor that takes one to the library. At all times, two decurions stand outside its door whether or not the Magistrix has taken to her desk inside. The library is the highest reaching chamber within the mansion as its vaulting ceilings reach up to the ends of the exterior mansion walls. On one side of the library, in-laid shelves host a plethora of books ranging from reference to fiction and the other end provides home to the scrolls and books important to the Varro cognomen explicitly such as financial records, birth records, death records and so on. The Magistrix maintains office hours within the library as well as takes mail there.

The Catacombs

Along the winding halls that pass the library is a staircase descending the surface of House Varro. It is equally heavy guarded if not more as the catacombs beneath the mansion provide a home to the treasury, prison cells and other nooks best left out of wandering eyes. Beyond those obvious things includes the reliquary, a place intertwined to the nature of the library in a more iconographic manner as it boasts heirlooms, trophies and other curios meticulously organised are secured behind wrought iron gates emboldened by a very present and undiscernable magic. The reliquary is under the hand of the Magistrix and only certain patrons are ever permitted various access levels.

XThe Varro surname is indeed a common one throughout the Highlands of Colovia. Many claim descent from this ancient and prestigious dynasty, but precious few can claim kinship to the current lord of the house. The main branch of the family has passed down through two brothers: Lucius Proximus Varro and his younger brother Andronicus Varro.

Records of the family extend all the way back to the Alessian Revolt, and further still through an alleged ancestor named Varron Long-Stride a proto-cyrod warrior and a notorious butcher of Ayleid elves. Varron is alleged to have mutilated, defiled, and murdered hundreds of the Heartland Mer in his lust for vengeance; born the son of a slave, he endured abuse like so many other downtrodden nedes.

Regardless of the authenticity of this claim, the Varro family tree is one that has been extensively recorded and researched by inquisitive scribes and old sages, who often are nose-deep in dusty tomes and scrolls of antiquity.

Lucius Varro would go on to succeed his father and sire five sons with a woman named Camilia. His younger brother, Andronicus Varro, would sire several sons of his own and continue the expansion of the Varro family; serving his elder sibling faithfully, diligently, and with contentment for his station. Both men have passed into Aetherius, with Lucius dying after his escape from Oblivion, and Andronicus at the hands of the Reachmen during Varen's Rebellion.

Records of the extended Varro family, consisting of Andronicus Varro and his children are detailed below.

femIM20.jpg

The children of Andronicus played an integral role in the events of the House prior to the ascension of Belisarius Varro as the lord of the house. The younger brother was a keen supporter and loyalist, a man of considerable military prowess, and a capable strategist and leader. He was an invaluable ally, and his death would in some part leave a hole that could not be replaced.

His children were born in close succession, and would each come to be known across the Highlands.

His eldest child and only daughter, Juno Varro was a famed Oracle living within the Sanctuary of Deipha, an ancient structure located on the north-western slope of Mount Tarnassus. The Sanctuary of Deipha is on de jure land of House Varro; but was considered a de facto holding of the Akatosh Chantry.

His eldest sons, Hector and Reman would grow into accomplished warriors, serving their house with loyalty and distinction; their martial valor was peerless and nigh unequaled amongst the ranks of other Colovian-stock.

And finally his youngest child Janus would serve his brother Lucius as his apprentice and scribe, the boy had a keen aptitude for sorcery, a prodigy worthy of tutorship.

Andronicus Varro

The scalp in his hand was fresh and soaked in blood-ichor. Andronicus unleashed a bellow to let his foes know that their doom was upon them. A proud and zealous Dagonite, Andronicus was a man of immense strength and physical musculature; able to cleave through swarms of Reachmen without tiring. He and his wife Irena would sire four children within the Estate. He served his brother loyally and without question, such was their bond.

Andronicus Varro would meet his end upon the outbreak Varen’s Rebellion. His horse Andromos would be perforated straight through his sable-brown neck, a javelin thrown by a nameless Reachmen. After falling he would descend into a frenzy, killing ally and foe alike in a profane orgy of bloodshed. He ultimately would be overwhelmed and decapitated. His head sent back to Lord Lucius Varro within a bloody sack.

Juno Varro

Juno quickly learned of the misery this world had to offer, as she was brought into life a bawling babe, blind and unwanted. Her father gazed upon her with scorn reflecting in his hues. Juno was to be offered as a sacrifice to Dagon, but this would not come to be. Whether by divine intervention or pure luck, the sinister ritualistic dagger would shatter. Her fate was to live.

Juno would leave her family behind to be sheltered by the Akatosh Chantry; trained as an oracle, a talent which came naturally to the sightless woman. Providing prophecies to the populace, noble and peasant alike. All were permitted to visit her and receive a prophecy given in hexametric. Many poems of her utterances were recorded, however precious few copies survive into the current day. The Sanctuary of Deipha would be defiled and burned during Varen’s Rebellion. Her fate ultimately is unknown, but it is presumed she perished during the burning of Deipha.

Hector Varro

The Young Horse they called him, a rising star within the Third Legion. The eldest son of Andronicus and a man of mild-temper - blessed with the stature of a nord. Hector would emulate his father and his collective ancestors in his intense study of military history and martial pursuits. Prone to impatience and compulsive decision making, a fatal flaw in his personality, which would ultimately lead to a reckless charge that would prematurely end his life.

He was amicable with his cousin Trajan and was often referred to as his second shadow. He would serve within the Third Legion as a young and upcoming Decurion, leading a small cavalry unit of untested equites. At the age of twenty-four he would perish just outside of Rimmen, killed in a major skirmish against Khajiit dissidents to Tharn regime. What remained of his gorged body would be returned to the Varro Estate and he would be buried beside his kin.

Reman Varro

Reman the Depraved, the middle child of Andronicus, bestowed the royal name of Reman upon his birth. This scion was expected to accomplish great deeds; the man in truth would live a life of depravity: Wrothful, deceitful, and cruel. His vices were many and his praises few. Reman was befittingly a favored child of the Princes, committing sin after sin, gluttonous in his lust and uncompromising in his greed. He fought fiercely during the rebellion and had a stark reputation for torture. His licentiousness would earn him ire from his allies.

Like his uncle and his cousins, he would meet a grizzly, gruesome end. He would flee the Estate after the downfall of Lucius vowing to return with an army at his back. The man would be successful in gathering a considerable force, however while in Kvatch he was untimely recognized and sentenced to death. Castrated and blinded, his eyes would be gouged out; boiling water thrown onto his face, with his teeth and hair pulled out by cruel devices.

Janus Varro

The youngest sibling, a man of hollow-heart and profane ambitions. Janus apprenticed under the patriarch of the house, his uncle Lucius. He is a charming man, persuasive, dutiful, and loyal. His youth would be etched away through war; serving as a battlemage alongside many of his kin. His close friendship with his cousin Belisarius would diminish after leaving for the Capital, fueled by a desire to continue serving his homeland.

Janus would lose his soul and his morality, his ambitions a deep bottomless well, from where Bal invited him to plunge further in, ever seeking more power. The Elder Councilor has a son, Varilian, sired with a wife who perished at his own hand.

What:

Wednesdays, bi-weekly, at 7:30 pm EST, the Varro Estate will be open to the public. Soldiers, diplomats, traders -- all are welcome to visit the House, and speak with the Lord, his officers, and the Varro houseguard. In a unique turn of events, it is said that Lord Varro has called for the Colovian Estates to form a confederation alliance, with hopes to create a united Imperial front to throw back foriegn aggression. The above draft was circlulated to potential Colovians, Nibenese, and Imperial sympathizers who might answer the call.

It reads:

ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION
The Colovian Confederacy

To all undersigned, we the people of the Colovian Estates hereby affix our names to these Articles of Confederation.

I. The Name of this Confederacy shall be The Colovian Confederacy.

II. Each Estate retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power and right which is not by this document expressly assigned to the Confederation remains with the Estates.

III. The Estates hereby enter into a firm league of friendship with each other, for their common defense, the security of their liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, binding themselves to assist each other, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretense.

IV. To beter secure and perpetuate mutual friendship and intercourse among the people of the Colovian Estates, the free inhabitants of these Estates, paupers, vagabonds, and fugitives from justice excepted, shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of free citizens of the Estates.

OOC:

RSVP only. Many have heard that Lord Varro has called for a moot among all Colovian lords or those sympathetic to the Imperial people and seeking neutral mutual alliance in this war.
