Character Story: A Pale Knight
They come, again and again. A blight on a landscape wild and unwelcoming to the weary souls of men. Here, the witches speak of Fate. If such a thing is true, if the Divine’s and their earth-bound remains truly follow such a principle, then our Fate is one that teeters on the edge of a knife. Either we will become thralls and fodder to the Gray Host, or we will overcome the wilds and claim our right to call this land home.
A former knight-at-arms from the First Era, Matthew is displaced from his own time due to an escort mission gone afoul.
Growing up in Bangkorai, Matthew lived the life of a cavalry knight for one of the lesser noble houses in the burgeoning landscape of Breton nobility. With ties to the Direnni, House Haveloc sought to make a name for itself amongst the vicious power-struggles in Bangkorai’s nobility. Having been stationed at the Bangkorai Garrison to repel the constant threat from the Grey Host, Matthew found himself employed under House Haveloc by a former friend and fellow knight, Edmund.
During the early years of Evermore’s founding, the constant terror from the wilds and King Styriche, the nobility sought increasingly desperate ways to deal with this threat. The patriarch of House Haveloc, originally hailing from Eastmarch and marrying into the Breton nobility, had travelled throughout Skyrim in his youth. Having been emboldened in days past by tales of the Five-Hundred Companions, he became convinced that a plea to one of these heroic spirits could lead to a solution against the Grey Host.
Whether it was senility, or desperation, Lord Haveloc dispatched his two sons, Edmund and Godrich, along with their companions at recommendation of the court mage. In the far eastern reaches of Skyrim was, according to rumour, a barrow that served as the resting place of one of Ysgramor’s Companions. There they ventured, under seal of their father. A tenuous promise of safety, but one that Matthew insisted be used with the paired precaution of taking the lesser roads. Their road was crossed with task on task, a farm in need of aid from wolves, a village beset by wild Reachfolk, or a small chapel under scrutiny from the extreme sects of the Alessian Order. Months passed until the small band finally found themselves near Taarengrav, their path leading to its resolution.
It was on a thunderous and rain-heavy day that they entered, the crows calling out to the greyed skies. Matthew murmuring about ill-luck on such days. It was only after the arduous tasking of protecting Godrich from the shambling dead, taking blow and tasking his reserves, that Matthew soon learned the truth of his fears.
In a flurried and heated fight with a draugr lord, Matthew found himself shield to shield with their foe. He had little time to notice the life drained from his companions in unison. Leaving him, and Edmund, and Godrich. A sharp blow against his shield jarred him, and a second blow from the sword left him dazed. In those final moments, Matthew could see Edmund being struck by the magics of his own brother, Godrich. Turning to face his kin-foe, the blood of his friend spilled, Matthew felt the searing pain of Godrich’s magics rip through him. His body meeting the cold stone, alongside his companions.
Godrich’s design was to enslave the heroic spirit for his own wishes, corrupt and ambitious as they were. Whatever the detail of these wishes was unknown to kin and friend, but Godrich did not achieve his goal. Honourless, and traitorous, he found his power unable to overcome the ward upon the tomb and damned himself and his companions to an eternity of proving themselves worthy to leave their trial.
Godrich would succumb, in a mere decade. The others, their breath had left their bodies by the time Godrich triggered the curse. Save Matthew, who lay on the ancient flagstones, kept alive through the lingering healing reserves of his own magicka.
And so, this is the Fate that Matthew would face. Depleted of magicka, wounded, exhausted, and bereft of his kin, he would fight through this trial. At times, he would sleep, and at times he would fight. Only to fall at the edge of the sword, the blow of a mace, or the chilling pierce of magic. For the past few centuries he has slept. When the Soulburst occurred, he found himself awakened once more and facing the trials, but unable to fade away into slumber now.
As of late, a strange group of people have been making their way through his personal hell. Whoever they may be, he is unsure of their cause or their intent. Regardless of merit or cause, a recent disturbance in the area has caused a sudden depletion of the barrow's ward. Leaving a quite disoriented, out-dated knight asking for any who have heard of a mage named 'Master Asgautr'.

- By Blood and By Deed, an Oath Made is Kept : Matthew is a man who adheres strictly to his moral code, and oath. As such, he is bound to offer aide and helpful company to those who are in need.
- A House of Fallen Name : It has been many decades since House Haveloc fell from favor, and memory of the Courts. Yet, there may be some who vaguely recall the strange crest he bears on his shield.
- A Knight of the Cart : While not on the frontiers, searching for answers, Matthew has taken to wandering the roads and wilds of Bangkorai in search of something.
